The books

June 26, 2008

The purpose and function of Stone Bridge Books & Gifts is found in its name. Stones provide a strong foundation, they were used in Bible times as a remembrance. Jesus is the first and most important stone, the one who holds it all together. Stones are used for building, and a definite purpose of our place is to build bridges. Bridges of hope, of peace, of understanding. We want to show the love of the Father in sending His Son to bridge the gap between the God somewhere and mankind nowhere near Him. Since relationships give birth to more relationships. we want to build bridges in our community. Having a place where people can meet, with good music, and all the good books available, is a good beginning.

THE BOOKS: There is broad variety of good books that include ART, BIBLE, BIOGRAPHY, CHILDREN – Babies & toddlers, picture books , beginning readers, CLASSICS, FICTION, HEALTH & NUTRITION, HISTORY, LITERATURE, MARRIAGE & FAMILY, MATH, MUSIC, POETRY, SCIENCE. There is a CHRISTIAN LIVING section that includes authors from a broad scope of the Christian family. The store has some more very small representative sections, to remind everyone that I can get just about any book in just a matter of days.

There is also a large USED BOOK section, arranged by similar categories, that also has some very special rare and antique books.

When I homeschooled, I learned about great books – the great books are in their specific category (such as historical fiction, classics, art ). There is a special how-to-homeschool section, that includes some of my favorites, like the Clarkson’s Educating the Whole Hearted Child, For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay, and Unit Studies like Five in a Row.

Upsource – monthly meet

June 21, 2008

Come meet with a small conversational group, lead by Neal Thomsen, the last Thursday of each month at 7pm. Neal positively encourages us to gain control of the short time we have in our lives by purposeful planning. Neal can fill your head with positive inspiring quotes and proverbs; he will recommend people and books that are life changers. One (that, of course, I carry in my store) is THINKING FOR A CHANGE, by John Maxwell, a christian author who is a great motivational speaker. I just started reading this book – to quote him from chapter 1:”One reason people don’t achieve their dreams is that they desire to change their results without changing their thinking.” Another: “Your life is a result of your thinking yesterday. Your life tomorrow will be determined by what you think today.”

I’m reminded of Phil. 4:8 in the New Testament: “Whatever is true,..honorable,..just,..pure,..pleasing,..commendable,..any excellence, anything worthy of praise, think on these things.”

Jeff Miller Returns! july 5th (also Dec. ‘08) & March 14, 09!

June 19, 2008

Are you one of many in Cheatham County who read the newspaper article about the guitar artistry of Jeff Miller, but did not make it to his concert at our place in Ashland City? Here’s another chance – Saturday evening July 5th – His music makes me think of a bit of Phil Keaggy and Chris Rice – doesn’t that sound enjoyable?

Under construction

June 16, 2008

Like most things in life, the web site is in the process of becoming – I’m no techno and am very busy in the bookstore, so I did not want to do this, BUT I am, with the help of our good neighbor and computer whiz, Tim, who is giving me one mini-lesson every few days.  Maybe each of us can do what we thought we could not, just one baby step at a time – now I have the “want to” – it’s exciting!  So I appreciate your patience.  Jo Ann

Jo, or whomever reads this… On any of the inside pages (not home page) you will see “Events Calendar” on the right, near the bottom. This is a list of upcoming events and Jo, you can add them as you want and it will show the next five. Hover over the word “Bible Study” and you will see how it works. I’m writing this merely so you’ll see it and know it is there. You can delete this post when you want. T

bible study

June 15, 2008

Each Monday from 11:00 -12:30 a small group meets to study – this summer (2009) we have been going through the “red letters” in the NewTestament, verse by verse, taking the words of Jesus to heart.   Each person reads a verse and tells what it means, then we may look up cross references and all discuss.  About 4 years ago Sharon Warren started this great little bare-bones group – meaning we just use the bible with the bible only – Bible study in the bookstore.

Book discussion – THE SHACK

June 14, 2008

Come to the bookstore this Thursday, June 19, and 7pm for a discussion on the best seller and very beloved fiction book written by William P. Young. The review and reactions to this book vary greatly – with much emotion. To join in the discussion in this week you must have read the book – it’s only fair! Calling to reserve your seat would be helpful.

We’ll do an online discuss later.
